Spends Three Days in the Swamps Without Food
FOREMAN—Tom Crawford, farmer of the Allene community nine miles east of this place (Foreman) , was lost in the woods, known as Gum Flats, from an early hour Friday morning until late Sunday afternoon.
Crawford left his home and family Friday morning for the purpose of looking for his horses which had strayed, he thought, into the bottom country between Allene and Foreman.
When he failed to return Friday night searching parties were organized. The hunt for the man was kept up all of Saturday and the greater part of the day Sunday, or until he was reported to have been found.
Crawford stated to parties here Sunday night that he had been lost the entire time. While the gum flats are only a few miles in width, they extend north for several miles, and Crawford thinks he must have wandered up and down the swamp lands, several times, after he had lost his bearings in the dense woods.
According to Crawford, he had been without anything to eat from the time he left home until he emerged from the woods near Foreman late Sunday afternoon and came here for something to eat.
Crawford and his brother, Price, had lived together in a home near Allene. The house and practically all the contents were destroyed in a fire a few days ago. The horses for which Mr Crawford was in search had been turned from the lot at the time of the fire and had strayed from the place.

OGDEN ESTABLISHED IN 1878, DERIVES ITS NAME FROM THE WIFE OF
JUDGE W.M. BATES
By Mrs. I.N. Hutt, Ogden
Early records show that in 1838, Mr. Nunneley and family lived on the present site of Ogden. He
owned many acres of land that were farmed by his slaves. He and his wife died and were buried here
on a hillside near what is called Hopson’s Spring. Mr. and Mrs. Nunneley are the grand parents of Mrs.
C.H. Park of Ashdown. Other settlers were the Paul Bagley’s and the Christopher Waddell’s.
In 1878 Judge M.W. Bates came and gave the place the maiden name of his second wife, who was an
Ogden. He owned the first cotton gin, saw mill and store. He also helped to build the first railroad,
known as P & G (Pittsburg and Gulf) and gave the lot for the depot. His son in law, Dr. Bright, was the
first physician and was followed by Dr. Allen Bellar of Ashdown. Miss Gabrielle Avondeigner taught
the first school in an old Methodist church having seven pupils. They were Paul Hamilton Phillips,
Carrie Phillips (Mrs. Jim Sanderson, Sr.), Sam and Lizzie Bates, Mae and Matt Nichols, and Lottie
Crouch.
School lasted a full nine months and the salary was ----- per month. Other residents here at the time
were the W.S. Crouch’s, W.J. McDowell’s, Paul Hamilton’s (grand parents of Dr. P.H. Phillips and
Mrs. Jim Sanderson, Sr.), Mrs. Weaver and grandchildren, Matt Frank’s, Ollie and May Nichols.
Rev. Ed Steele of Richmond circuit was the first pastor. The first telephone was in the residence of W.S.
Crouch.
Along about 1900, others came. Some of these were Polk Hean and family, and J.D. Budd, the latter
starting a boom in Ogden. He, with his business partner, G.E. Hymer, interested men from various
states in the timber and farming business, are making Ogden one of the most thriving towns of its size
in the southwest. Lewis Wheelis of Ashdown followed Miss Avondeigner here a teacher and Dr. I.N.
Hutt of Fouke, came in 1903 as a young physician and has practiced here ever since.
Remaining residents here of 30 years ago are Mrs. W.S. Crouch and daughters, Mrs. Addie McDowell
and Mrs. Sadie Duncan, Mrs. W.J. McDowell, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Budd, Oscar Taylor, Charles M.
Welch, Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Ball and daughters, Mrs. Grace Furlow and Mrs. Stella Wardell, Mrs. Elma
Wood Gill, Mrs. Lilly Adcock, Mrs. Vesta Furlow and J.G. Smithson.

Bound by the Rivers
Steamboats brought supplies, luxuries such as whiskey and flour, and people in and out of the county. But if you wanted to go into Sevier County to the North, Hempstead County to the east, or Miller County to the south, most likely you had to get on a ferry to do it.
In the early to mid 1800’s there were over twenty ferries in operation.
These ferries were located at major road crossings over the county line.
From Sevier County Court Records:
This day the following named persons were granted Ferry privileges at their several Ferries as follows to wit;
James Morris at his ferry across Little River from the 24th day of October 1843. William Wright at his ferry across Little River from the 25th day of April 1844 and Benjamin H. Layne at his ferry across Red River from 24th day of July, 1844. It is therefore ordered by the court that there be levied and collected from each of the above dates, and there are hereby authorized to receive the following rates at their respective ferries to wit;
For each man and horse 25 cents, for each footman 12 and ½ cents, for each wheel carriage ox cart or wagon 25 cents per wheel, for each span of horses or yoke of oxen, in carriage cart or wagon 25 cents, for each head of cattle 6 and ¼ cents for each head of sheep or hogs 3 cents.
It is therefore ordered that licenses be granted to the above-named persons in accordance with law.
April Term 1849
This day it appearing to the courts, that there has been no tax assessed on ferry privileges in this county since the passage of the late revenue act of 16th December 1846 and that said act does not repeal the act requiring each person keeping a ferry to procure from the county court a license for such privilege, and it appearing to the court that there are five ferries now established in this county at which charges are made for ferriages, and that the owners there of have not received from this court a license for that purpose and that the rates of ferriages have not been fixed by this court to wit:
The Ferry kept by Benjamin H. Layne at Laynesport across Red River, the ferry kept by William Wright across Little River, the ferry kept by J. Bowers across the Little River, the ferry kept by John Hudgens across the Little River, the ferry kept by William Burk across Little River.
It is therefore ordered by the county that there be levied as a tax on the privileges of ferrying at said ferries as follows twenty; on the ferry kept by Benjamin Layne the sum of twenty dollars, on that kept by Bowers the sum of ten dollars, on that kept by William Wright the sum of fifteen dollars, on that kept by John Hudgens the sum of fifteen dollars, and on that kept by William Burk the sum of five dollars, for such privileges for the term of one year from this date.
And that the rates of ferriages at said ferries shall be as follows, to wit:
For carriages or wagons,
For each two horse wagon or carriage with the horses the sum of one dollar, on each four horse carriage or wagon with four horses or two yoke of oxen the sum of one dollar and fifty cents, for each six horse wagon with six horses or three yoke of oxen the sum of one dollar and seventy five cents and on each cart or carriage with two or four wheels, and horses, the sum of fifty cents.
On each man and horse, the sum of twenty five cents.
On each foot passenger the sum of ten cents.
On each led horse the sum of fifteen cents.
On each head of cattle, the sum of five cents.
On each head of hogs or sheep the sum of three cents.
And it is further ordered by the court that the clerk of this court issue a license to each of the ferryman keeping said ferries in accordance with the foregoing order and deliver the same to the sheriff of this county as mentioned in thir several accounts now filed as follows to wit;
H.G. Rind as presiding judge of the county and Probate courts the sum of twelve dollars…$12.00
Joseph McCraven associate Justice the sum of $14.00
Lavner P. Griffing associate Justice the sum of $14.00
It is ordered that the clerk of this court draw warrants on the Treasurer for the same.
Ordered that court adjourn until court in course.
Signed:
H.G. Rind P. Judge
Joseph McCraven As. J.P.

Bullet Kills Prosecutor
ASHDOWN, Ark.
Prosecutor Richard Coker Thomas, 40, was shot to death in front of the little River County jail here last night, and a former mental patient whom Thomas was sending to jail was arrested on an open charge.
Sheriff Aubrey Thrash said a murder charge would be filed against 67 year old John Spencer Furlow, who lived alone on a small farm three miles outside this small southwest Arkansas town. Thomas was shot in the heart with a .22-ca!iber revolver. Thrash said Furlow fired two other shots into a group of men standing nearby, but no one else was injured. The sheriff said Furlow was committed to the state hospital for the mentally ill at Little Rock from 1936 to 1940.
Thomas had ordered Furlow jailed on grounds that he had threatened several townspeople with a shotgun. The sheriff said that when he took Furlow's arm to lead him to jail, Furlow drew a pistol and fired at the prosecutor.
