Winthrop, Arkansas Historical School Welcome

Welcome to Historical Winthrop School. Home of the Winthrop Wolves!

Many good things have happened to the old two story school building since the consolidation with Horatio School District. The Horatio School Board generously decided to give the City of Winthrop a 100 year lease on the historic building. In 1993 a restoration preservation committee was appointed to plan and execute the means whereby the old building could continue to serve the community for generations to come.

The first grade room is the Winthrop City Hall with two offices, one for the town marshal and one for the town secretary. The rest of the room is used for city council meetings with space for town hall meetings and elections. This expense was the responsibility of the Winthrop City Council.

Across the hall in the second grade room, we developed a general meeting room with tables and chairs for 50 people. This room is available for class and family reunions, adult education classes, and a general meeting hall for the people of the Winthrop area. This room has already been used to great lengths by past classes for reunions and family get-togethers. We have heat for winter and a window air conditioner for summer. People using this room also have the opportunity to visit the Museum and Veterans Room of which we are very proud.

The Northeast corner room is the Museum-Visitor Center. The mementos and artifacts of the past that have been donated have been a success from the very start. It is the most interesting and brings back so many fond memories to all that visit this historical room.

The Veterans Room is on the Northwest corner and it too has been a success. There has been lot of memorabilia donated, along with pictures of many men and women from our school that served in the military. If you view our page, attended school here and know that your picture is not in the Veterans Room, please furnish the committee with one to be displayed.

The only room upstairs being used at this time is the 12th Grade room. This is used for Basketball memories i.e. trophies, uniforms, jackets, and anything you may wish to donate to this room.

There is always work to be done and some of it very costly and everything that has been repaired on this old school has been made through donation. Admission to tour the building is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. The building is open by appointment only.

On November 7, 2001 our beloved school was placed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places.
