The new building, C.D. Franks, which was completed, contained the 5th and 6th grades. The 1970-71 Burke Street Elementary School Faculty: Principal, Margaret Daniel; 1st grade teachers -- Lucille Thrash, Mildred Franks, Thelma Sikes, Imogene Stoker, Peggy Dildy and Martha Walker; 2nd grade teachers -- Irene Pauley, Rose Caler, Vickie Franks, Theara King, Ellen Welch McAllister and Pat Racop (the Methodist Minister's wife); 3rd grade teachers -- Eva Merrell, Wanda Bratton, Jerrie Brown, Mable Morris (from colored school) and Cora Vinson (from colored school); 4th grade teachers -- Kippy Wilson, Alice Giles (new), Sarah Horn (new), Jessie Taylor (from colored school) and Rosa Torrence (from colored school). Special education -- Linda Hambleton (new); Remedial reading -- Flo Johnson and Mabel Card; Librarian -- Mamie Taylor; and Secretary -- Gloria Meeker. Custodians -- Mr. Woodall and Mariah Walker.
Since Burke Street School is so crowded, even though four rooms had been added on the west side of the north wing several years ago. Rose Caler's class is meeting in the large room of the Barcie Cobb Taylor house. A smaller room in the house is used as the library for Librarian, Mamie Taylor. One room in the Phillip's house, which has also been purchased by the school, serves as the classroom for Vickie Stewart's 2nd grade. Portable buildings between the school's main building and the wing on the north had already been in use by the remedial reading teachers.
Tuesday, April 27th -- Another pretty day. After school Margaret and I went to Texarkana. She ordered plaques for three of our retiring teachers -- Everett and Jessie Taylor, who have both taught for 38 years and Rose Caler, who has taught for 30 years. We bought books (Apples of Gold) for Ellen Welch McAllister and Mildred Franks, who are leaving our school system. Ellen will teach in Virginia next term.

Pat Adkison was on 2nd grade yard duty. She took the children out all three play periods. Then Superintendent Bill Beasley gave each of us a plaque from the Ashdown School District. The Burke Street School personnel had a nice salad luncheon at the cafetorium. Superintendent Beasley and Hamilton Orton were also there. We three retirees were presented with silver trays from the Burke Street School staff. This has been a very nice day!
